HUNTING
A LITTLE ABOUT THE ELK
Lots of hunting opportunities
Moose, elk, a large deer (Alces alces). English moose/elk, German elk, Swedish moose.
Moose are primarily associated with Sweden, where there are around 250,000 of them. One of the large moose areas is in Småland between Ljungby, Markaryd and Älmhult.
The elk can weigh 500-700 kg (which means 250 kg of meat per slaughtered animal on the dinner table) and it can be around 3 metres long. It is about 2 metres high above the shoulders, which is somewhat more than an Arabian horse. Despite this size, the moose is a good swimmer. This is because its fur is made up of hollow hairs that give it great static buoyancy. It is also good at diving 5-6 metres into the lakes where it can find its food.
The moose, on the other hand, has a hard time feeding on the ground, its neck is far too short for this. It has to straddle to reach the grass. Therefore, it often eats leaves from trees. This can be seen in the forests where they roam. At a height of two metres above the ground, a wreath can be gnawed around the trees, a so-called moose wreath. This can add up to 10 kilos of twigs a day to satisfy their hunger.

THE GOOD-NATURED MOOSE
Moose are good-natured. But if you meet a moose with backwards ears and raised neck hairs - beware. Its claws, measuring 12 x 16 cm, can strike hard. If you are attacked, go behind a tree. Moose can't run around trees. It's not designed for that.
Moose are in rut from September to November. During this period, the bull moose scrapes furrows in the ground, where it urinates and then wallows in the mud. After cleaning itself up, it finds a cow moose, which it captures.
The cow is pregnant for 8 months and gives birth to 1-2 cubs. The average moose lives between 8 and 25 years.
Researchers have found that many pregnant Yellowstone elk cows are moving closer to human habitats to avoid bears.
The hunt starts in October and each area has its quota of moose that can be shot. Almost 100,000 moose are killed each year. In 1994 it was 94,000. While in 1982, 174,741 moose were shot!
In addition, many moose are killed every year by Swedish and foreign motorists. In northern Sweden, the moose hunt begins on the first Monday in September.
